Eindhoven’s position in the south of the Netherlands, close to the Belgian border, makes it an unusually strong base for day trips in multiple directions. Utrecht and Amsterdam are reachable in under ninety minutes by train. Maastricht, the most beautiful city in the Netherlands by most measures, is an hour away. Antwerp is under an hour by train via Breda. Brussels and Bruges are within comfortable day-trip range. Closer to home, the Brabant countryside offers the Van Gogh heritage trail, Den Bosch with its extraordinary cathedral, and the market town of Tilburg. All of this from a city that is already significantly cheaper to live in than the Randstad. Tickets can be booked at ns.nl for Dutch domestic trains and at nsinternational.com for international journeys including Belgium.

All train times below are approximate journey times from Eindhoven Centraal. International trains to Belgium require a separate ticket from Dutch domestic fares. The NS app and website handle Dutch journeys; NS International handles cross-border bookings to Antwerp, Brussels, and Bruges.

The most compelling day trip from Eindhoven and the most beautiful city in the Netherlands. Maastricht sits on the Maas river close to the Belgian and German borders, with a historic centre of remarkable completeness: Roman fortifications, medieval churches including the Basilica of Saint Servatius and the Church of Our Lady, Vrijthof square lined with terrace cafes, and a food and wine culture that reflects the city’s position at the crossroads of three countries. The Bonnefanten museum has one of the finest art collections in the region. The city’s relaxed, southern European atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in the Netherlands and comes as a genuine surprise to first-time visitors. Worth a full day and an easy return journey in the evening.

The closest major Dutch city to Eindhoven with genuine historic character: a medieval centre built around the Dom Tower and the canal-level wharf cellars that are unique in the Netherlands, now housing restaurants and bars at water level. Utrecht also has excellent museums including the Centraal Museum, the Spoorwegmuseum (Dutch Railway Museum) housed in a Victorian station, and the Museum Speelklok of self-playing musical instruments. The city has a large student population, good independent shopping along the Oudegracht, and a relaxed weekend atmosphere. A strong alternative to Amsterdam for those who find the capital too busy or too expensive.

The closest significant day trip from Eindhoven and one of the most rewarding. Den Bosch, properly ‘s-Hertogenbosch, is a medieval Brabant city with a spectacular Gothic cathedral, Sint-Jan’s Kathedraal, whose exterior stonework is among the most elaborate in northern Europe. The city centre is well preserved around a network of inner canals, and the covered market in the Markt is one of the finest in the Netherlands. The Jheronimus Bosch Art Center explores the work of the city’s most famous son. Den Bosch is also known for its food culture, particularly the bossche bol, a giant cream-filled pastry that is compulsory to eat at least once. Easy enough for a half-day visit, rewarding enough to stay longer.

The national capital and the most internationally visited city in the Netherlands is a natural day trip for Eindhoven residents who want to access major museums, Schiphol Airport, or the broader range of urban experiences that a city of Amsterdam’s scale provides. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House are all within cycling distance of Amsterdam Centraal. The canal district is genuinely beautiful on a weekday when the tourist crowds are lighter. Worth the ninety-minute journey for a cultural day out, though Eindhoven residents who have lived there for more than a few months tend to find the pace and price level of Amsterdam exhausting compared to home.

The Netherlands’ second city and the most architecturally interesting in terms of contemporary design. Rotterdam was almost entirely rebuilt after the wartime bombing that also affected Eindhoven, and the result is a city that has treated its blank slate as an opportunity rather than a loss: the Markthal, the Cube Houses, the Erasmus Bridge, and a skyline of ambitious contemporary architecture make it the most visually distinctive city in the country. The Kunsthal, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (currently being restored), and the Depot are all worth visiting. Rotterdam also has some of the best restaurants in the Netherlands. A strong day trip for those interested in architecture and food.

The seat of the Dutch government, the International Court of Justice, and many of the country’s most important institutions is a city with a formal elegance that Amsterdam lacks. The Mauritshuis houses Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and a world-class collection of Dutch Golden Age painting in a small, unhurried museum. The Gemeentemuseum, recently renamed the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, holds the world’s largest collection of Mondrian. The Binnenhof political complex is one of the most photographed buildings in the Netherlands. A strong cultural day trip with excellent train connections from Eindhoven, made more interesting for expats by the city’s extraordinary concentration of international institutions and the international community that comes with them.

Antwerp is the most underrated city in western Europe for a day trip from Eindhoven. The Antwerpen-Centraal railway station is one of the most beautiful buildings in Belgium, a cathedral-scale neo-Baroque structure that has been described as the world’s most beautiful station, and it sets the tone for a city with extraordinary architecture at every turn. The old city around the Grote Markt, the Cathedral of Our Lady with its Rubens paintings, the Museum aan de Stroom and the Fashion Museum, the Rubenshuis, and a restaurant and bar scene that consistently places it among the finest food cities in Europe. About an hour by train changing at Breda, bookable via NS International. Easily one of the best day trips available from Eindhoven.

The most intact medieval city in northern Europe, with a UNESCO-listed historic centre of canals, belfry towers, and Flemish Gothic architecture that has survived largely unchanged. The Groeningemuseum holds the finest collection of Flemish Primitives in existence, including Jan van Eyck’s Madonna with Canon van der Paele. The chocolate shops, beer culture, and waterside cafe terraces make it a satisfying day out beyond the museums. Roughly two hours by train via Antwerp or Ghent, making it a full day commitment rather than a casual half-day. Worth the journey once or twice a year and particularly rewarding outside the peak tourist season when the streets are quieter.

The Belgian and European capital is well within day-trip range of Eindhoven, with a train journey of roughly ninety minutes to two hours via Antwerp. The Grand-Place is one of the finest market squares in Europe. The Magritte Museum, the Atomium, the Cinquantenaire Park museums, and the Comic Strip Museum give a range of cultural options across a full day. Brussels is also one of the finest cities in Europe for food and beer, with a restaurant scene that reflects its position at the crossroads of French, Flemish, and European cooking. A natural trip for Eindhoven residents with visiting family or friends who want to show Europe’s institutional capital alongside its cultural and culinary life.
