← Back to the Eindhoven city guide

Eindhoven’s museums reflect the city’s two defining identities: industrial heritage and contemporary design. The Van Abbemuseum is one of the first and finest museums of contemporary art in Europe. The Philips Museum sits in the original light bulb factory and traces the company that built the city. The DAF Museum covers the automotive history of a firm that still employs thousands in the region. The preHistorisch Dorp takes a different approach entirely, recreating six periods of history on the edge of the Genneper Parken. Together they form a museum offer that rewards more than a day of serious visiting. For broader things to do in Eindhoven see the attractions guide.

Most Eindhoven museums are closed on Mondays, with the exception of some school holiday openings. The Philips Museum, Van Abbemuseum, and DAF Museum all benefit from pre-booking tickets online, particularly during Dutch Design Week in October when visitor numbers across the city rise sharply.

01Van Abbemuseum€€
Bilderdijklaan 10, 5611 NH Eindhoven · View on Google Maps

One of the first public museums for contemporary art to be established in Europe, and still one of the finest. The Van Abbemuseum holds a collection of over 3,400 works including key pieces by Joseph Beuys, Marc Chagall, Marlene Dumas, El Lissitzky, Pablo Picasso, and Martha Rosler. The building itself, a combination of the original 1936 structure and a striking 2003 extension, is worth visiting as architecture. The museum takes an experimental approach to how art functions in society, which means the displays and programming are consistently more interesting than a standard chronological hang. The library is free and open to visitors who want to work in a genuinely unusual setting. Essential for any visitor with a serious interest in modern and contemporary art.

Noord Brabantlaan 1A, 5652 LA Eindhoven · View on Google Maps

One of the most distinctive buildings in the Netherlands, a flying saucer-shaped conference centre and exhibition space originally built by Philips in 1966 as a science and technology museum. Today the Evoluon houses the RetroFuture exhibition inside the iconic dome, a permanent display exploring the history of futurism and the relationship between technology and design across the twentieth century. The building alone is worth the trip: it is one of the finest examples of Googie-influenced architecture in Europe and a physical embodiment of the optimistic industrial ambition that defined Philips-era Eindhoven. A natural companion to the Philips Museum for anyone wanting to understand the city’s technological history in full.

The museum of Koninklijke Philips N.V., located in the original light bulb factory on the Emmasingel where the company was founded in 1891. The permanent exhibition traces the development of Philips from a tiny company producing a single product to a global technology leader, covering the history of light, consumer electronics, healthcare technology, and the remarkable social history of the company town that Eindhoven became under Philips’ influence. Interactive family activities and seasonal programming make it accessible to all ages. Closed on Mondays except during school holidays. An essential stop for understanding why Eindhoven exists in its current form, and why the Brainport ecosystem that replaced Philips as the city’s economic engine was able to take root.

04DAF Museum€€
Tongelresestraat 27, 5613 DA Eindhoven · View on Google Maps

An extensive collection covering the full history of DAF, the Eindhoven-founded vehicle manufacturer whose Variomatic continuously variable transmission was a genuine engineering breakthrough. The museum spans passenger cars, trucks, military vehicles, and racing cars, with the DAF Siluro, a streamlined speed record car from the 1960s, the centrepiece of the collection. DAF trucks are still manufactured in Eindhoven today as part of the PACCAR group, and the museum contextualises the company within the broader industrial history of the city and the region. Consistently praised as one of the most enjoyable automotive museums in the Netherlands. Worth combining with the Philips Museum for a full picture of Eindhoven’s industrial heritage.

07Next Nature Museum€€
Eindhoven · View on Google Maps

A museum built around the concept of next nature: the idea that as human-made systems grow more complex and autonomous, they acquire some of the characteristics of nature itself. Displays cover the intersection of technology, biology, and design, exploring how digital systems, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology are reshaping what we understand as natural. The subject matter connects directly to the Brainport ecosystem and the research being done at TU Eindhoven and the High Tech Campus. A thought-provoking and distinctly Eindhoven museum that reflects the city’s position at the frontier of technology and design. More suited to adults and older teenagers than younger children.

Practical information

Opening days: Most Eindhoven museums are closed on Mondays, with exceptions during school holidays. The Philips Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm. The Van Abbemuseum is closed Monday and Tuesday. Check individual museum websites before visiting.

Dutch Design Week: Every October, Dutch Design Week transforms Eindhoven into a global design event. Museum opening hours extend, special exhibitions open, and the Van Abbemuseum and Evoluon both play significant roles in the programme. See the attractions guide for more on Dutch Design Week and the Glow light festival.

Combining museums: The Philips Museum and the Evoluon make a natural pair for a full day covering Eindhoven’s industrial and technological history. The preHistorisch Dorp and the Genneper Parken are better combined with a half day outside. The Van Abbemuseum deserves its own morning or afternoon.

For families: The preHistorisch Dorp is the strongest family option in the region, particularly for children aged five to twelve. The Philips Museum has an interactive family trail. The DAF Museum works well for children interested in vehicles.
