← Back to the Eindhoven city guide

Eindhoven is greener than its industrial reputation suggests. The city is surrounded by parks and wooded areas, with the Genneper Parken on the southern edge one of the largest urban park complexes in the Netherlands. Philips left behind not only factories but also parks: the Philips de Jongh Park in Strijp was a gift from the founding family to the city in 1920, and the Philips Fruittuin orchard remains a working fruit garden open to the public. The River Dommel and River Tongelreep run through or alongside the most significant green spaces, and much of the best of Eindhoven’s nature is most easily explored by bicycle. For cycling routes and the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde path see the attractions guide.

Eindhoven’s parks are connected by a cycling infrastructure that makes it practical to move between them on two wheels in a single afternoon. The Green Corridor linking the Philips de Jongh Park and the Philips Fruittuin is a dedicated cycling and walking route through the city’s northern green belt.

One of the largest urban park complexes in the Netherlands, stretching along the River Dommel and Tongelreep on the southern edge of Eindhoven. The Genneper Parken encompasses extensive walking and cycling paths through nature around both rivers, the preHistorisch Dorp open-air museum, the Genneper Hoeve organic farm where you can buy produce and ice cream, miniature golf, and the house of cartoonist Ton Smit. The Genneper Watermill, first mentioned in records from 1249 and painted several times by Van Gogh during his Nuenen years, sits within the park and is a national monument. Connecting south to the Stadswandelpark, the combined green corridor gives Eindhoven residents a significant slice of nature within cycling distance of the city centre.

02Philips de Jongh ParkFree
Strijp district, Eindhoven · View on Google Maps

A large park in the Strijp district donated to the city of Eindhoven in 1920 by Anton Philips and his wife Anna Philips de Jongh, whose name the park bears, on the condition that it remain a green space for residents permanently. The Philips family built their family estate here in 1934, where Frits Philips, known as Mr Eindhoven, lived until his death in 2005. The park and estate together cover a significant area of the city’s western green belt and the park itself is a pleasant and well-maintained green space suitable for walking, cycling, and running. Part of the Green Corridor that connects northward to the Philips Fruittuin.

03StadswandelparkFree
Near the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven · View on Google Maps

The city walking park adjacent to the Van Abbemuseum, serving as the green buffer between the city centre and the broader Genneper Parken complex to the south. A well-used park for daily walks and runs for residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods, with paths along the River Dommel providing the most pleasant route. The connection southward into the Genneper Parken makes it a natural starting point for longer walking or cycling excursions without needing to leave green space until reaching the city. Quieter during weekday mornings than the weekend and a reliable spot for residents of the centre to get outdoor time without travelling far.

04Philips FruittuinFree
North of Philips de Jongh Park, Green Corridor, Eindhoven · View on Google Maps

A working orchard left behind by Philips and now open to the public as part of the city’s Green Corridor. Visitors can walk or cycle through the orchard, and fruit picking with children is possible in season. The adjacent Landwinkel sells local fruit juices and produce, and the Pannenkoekenhuis de Proeftuin, the only pancake house in Eindhoven, sits within the complex. One of the quieter and less obvious green spaces in the city, particularly good on a weekday morning in late summer when the orchard is at its most productive. Worth combining with the Philips de Jongh Park as part of a longer Green Corridor cycling route.

05Leidingstraat Garden at Strijp-SFree
Leidingstraat, Strijp-S, Eindhoven · View on Google Maps

An elevated garden running along the Leidingstraat at Strijp-S, occupying the former utility cable corridor where gas and liquids once flowed between the Philips factory buildings. The planting was designed by internationally celebrated garden designer Piet Oudolf, whose signature naturalistic planting style creates a wilder and more textured landscape than a conventional public garden. Light art installations by Har Hollands are integrated into the structure. A distinctive urban green space that reflects Strijp-S’s approach to its industrial heritage: not erasing it, but working with it and around it in ways that produce something new. Worth seeking out on any visit to the district.

06VictoriaparkFree
Victoriapark, Eindhoven · View on Google Maps

A residential park in the western part of the city that has become increasingly well known as the setting for Zwartwit Koffie, the Australian-style cafe with one of the best terraces in Eindhoven looking out over the park. The park itself is a well-maintained green space popular with families and dog walkers, with a pleasant open character and enough space for picnics and informal sports. Worth visiting alongside a coffee at Zwartwit for a Sunday morning that combines a good cafe with a proper outdoor walk rather than sitting in the city centre all day.

07The Bergen Neighbourhood Green SpacesFree
De Bergen, Eindhoven Centrum · View on Google Maps

The Bergen district, Eindhoven’s most characterful inner-city neighbourhood, is built around a network of smaller streets, squares, and planted areas that give it a greener and more human-scaled feel than the broader city centre. The neighbourhood contains Bean Brothers coffee roastery, Stadsbranderij brewery, and several of the city’s best independent shops and cafes, with green squares and tree-lined streets connecting them. The Bergen is particularly pleasant to walk through slowly on a weekend afternoon, moving between coffee stops, independent shops, and the smaller parks and planted squares that punctuate the grid. The Kleine Berg runs through the heart of it and is Eindhoven’s best street for this kind of unhurried neighbourhood exploration.
