Shopping in Eindhoven

Shopping streets, markets and design stores, updated 2026
← Back to the Eindhoven city guide

Eindhoven’s shopping falls into four distinct zones that serve very different purposes. The Demer and Rechtestraat are the main high-street corridor where the major chains are concentrated. The Bergen neighbourhood offers the best independent, boutique, and design-focused shopping. Strijp-S has design concept stores, the Piet Hein Eek showroom, and the Urban Shopper creative retail building. WoensXL in the Woensel district is the practical destination for household errands across 140-plus stores under one semi-covered roof. The 18 Septemberplein square with its weekly Tuesday market connects the main shopping zone to the station and the Piazza Centre. For design and creative purchases Strijp-S and the Bergen are the areas that make Eindhoven worth taking seriously as a shopping destination rather than simply a functional one.

Most Eindhoven city-centre shops are open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, with extended hours on Thursdays to 9pm in the centre. Koopzondagen (Sunday shopping) operates on selected Sundays throughout the year in the city centre and at WoensXL. Check current Sunday opening schedules at the city centre management website or via Google before making a Sunday trip.

City Centre Shopping Streets

01Demer and Rechtestraat
City centre, from 18 Septemberplein toward the Markt · View on Google Maps

The main high-street shopping corridor of Eindhoven, running from the 18 Septemberplein through the Demer into the Rechtestraat. The Demer is one of the busiest shopping streets in the Netherlands with a full range of major chains: Zara, H&M, Primark, Douglas, Mango, Pull & Bear, and Apple among the most prominent. The Rechtestraat continues the retail strip with a slightly more varied offer including Scotch & Soda, the Bijenkorf department store, and a mix of larger and smaller fashion boutiques. The local route for a practical shopping afternoon is to start at the 18 Septemberplein, walk via the Demer to the Rechtestraat, and end at the Markt. A reliable and comprehensive high-street offer, though not particularly distinctive from any other major Dutch city centre.

02Heuvel Galerie and Piazza Centre

The Heuvel Galerie is Eindhoven’s main covered shopping mall, a practical indoor option for wet-weather shopping in the centre. The Piazza Centre on the 18 Septemberplein is partly covered and houses the Bijenkorf flagship store alongside Decathlon and around twenty to thirty other retailers, mostly larger chains. Neither is a destination in its own right but both provide convenient indoor shopping when the weather makes the Demer and Rechtestraat less appealing. The Piazza also hosts periodic events and markets throughout the year. The distinctive Blob and Bubble architectural structures on the 18 Septemberplein outside the Piazza are worth seeing regardless of whether you go inside.

0318 Septemberplein Tuesday Market
18 Septemberplein · every Tuesday 9am to 4pm · View on Google Maps

A weekly outdoor market on the 18 Septemberplein every Tuesday, with stalls covering fresh produce, flowers, clothing, household goods, and street food. One of the larger weekly markets in the Eindhoven city centre and a practical stop for fresh produce at competitive prices. The market fills the square between the station approach and the Piazza Centre. Worth incorporating into a Tuesday shopping trip that also covers the Demer and Rechtestraat. Additional smaller markets operate at other locations across the week: Kastelenplein on Wednesdays and Gerardusplein on Fridays.

Design, Independent and Boutique Shopping

04The Bergen neighbourhood
Kleine Berg, Grote Berg, Bergstraat · View on Google Maps

The three Berg streets in the De Bergen neighbourhood are the best area in Eindhoven for independent and boutique shopping, with a range of locally owned shops covering fashion, homeware, books, and speciality food and drink that gives the area a genuine character absent from the main shopping streets. Van Piere, the independent bookshop on the Nieuwe Emmasingel at the edge of the district, is one of the finest in the Netherlands. Vielgut stocks Samsoe and Samsoe, American Vintage, Rains, and a selection of Piet Hein Eek accessories. Several vintage and second-hand fashion shops sit alongside newer boutiques. The area rewards a slow Saturday afternoon of exploring rather than a targeted shopping trip.

05Strijp-S Design Stores and Urban Shopper
Strijp-S, Torenallee and surrounds · View on Google Maps

The Strijp-S district has its own retail ecosystem built around design, concept stores, and the creative community that lives and works there. Urban Shopper in the converted Anton building houses over twenty local art, design, and boutique fashion shops in a former Philips factory, including Brokaatje (brocante) and high-end secondhand designer fashion. The Piet Hein Eek showroom and shop on the adjacent Halvemaanstraat sells the designer’s own scrap-wood and recycled-material furniture, accessories, and homeware. The FeelGood Market at Ketelhuisplein runs on the third Sunday of each month with local food vendors and craft makers. For design-minded shopping that you cannot find in any other Dutch city, Strijp-S is where Eindhoven is genuinely different.

06Emma District and Willemstraat
Nieuwe Emmasingel and Willemstraat, Eindhoven Centrum · View on Google Maps

The Emma District around the Nieuwe Emmasingel and Willemstraat is a smaller and quieter shopping area that repays those who find it. Van Piere bookshop anchors the area with one of the most thoughtfully stocked independent bookshops in the country. Several specialty coffee bars, creative businesses, and local retailers cluster around the Emmasingel. The Willemstraat and nearby Kerkstraat add further independent options and neighbourhood restaurants. The area benefits from being slightly removed from the main shopping crowd while remaining within easy cycling distance of the centre. A good complement to the Bergen for an afternoon of independent discovery.

07WoensXL
Woensel district, north of the city centre · View on Google Maps

The largest shopping centre in Eindhoven, a semi-covered complex in the Woensel district with over 140 stores covering fashion, homeware, electronics, and daily essentials alongside three large supermarkets. WoensXL is the practical destination for the kind of shopping that requires a car and a trolley rather than a bicycle and a tote bag: large weekly grocery runs, furniture and appliance purchases, and the kind of errand-driven trip that makes sense to do in bulk. The scale and parking make it more convenient than the city centre for families who have moved to Eindhoven’s western or northern neighbourhoods. Not a destination in its own right but a reliable and well-organised practical resource.

Practical information

Opening hours: Standard city-centre shopping hours are Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, with late-night Thursday opening to 9pm in the centre. Sunday shopping (koopzondag) operates on selected Sundays: check current dates at the Eindhoven city centre website or via Google before planning a Sunday trip.

Weekly markets: The main Tuesday market runs at 18 Septemberplein from 9am to 4pm. Additional markets operate at Kastelenplein (Wednesday morning) and Gerardusplein (Friday). The FeelGood Market at Ketelhuisplein in Strijp-S runs on the third Sunday of each month with local food and craft vendors.

Design shopping route: The most rewarding shopping day in Eindhoven for design and independent retail starts at the Bergen, moves to the Piet Hein Eek complex in Strijp-R, then finishes at the Strijp-S Urban Shopper and Torenallee stores. Allow a full day and plan lunch at Piet Hein Eek’s restaurant or one of the Strijp-S food options.

Antwerp for serious shopping: Eindhoven’s proximity to Antwerp, under an hour by train, puts one of Europe’s finest fashion and design shopping cities within easy reach. For high-end fashion, vintage, and international design retail that Eindhoven cannot match, the day trip to Antwerp is well worth making. See the day trips guide.
