← Back to The Hague city guide

The Hague has one of the finest and most underrated dining scenes in the Netherlands. The large international community, diplomats, NGO workers, EU officials and expats from across the world, has driven genuine demand for quality and variety. The Zeeheldenkwartier and the streets around Denneweg are the best areas to start. For drinks before or after dinner, see our bars guide.

The Hague is the rijsttafel capital of the Netherlands. The city has the largest historic Indonesian community in the country, a legacy of the colonial period, and some of the best Indonesian restaurants you will find outside Indonesia itself. Any visit to The Hague should include at least one Indonesian meal.

01Garoeda€€
Kneuterdijk 18a, Centrum · View on Google Maps

A legendary Indonesian restaurant that has been serving rijsttafel in The Hague since 1945, making it one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in the city and one of the most historic in the Netherlands. The rijsttafel is extensive, traditional and genuinely excellent: careful spicing, proper technique and the depth that only comes from decades of practice. The unhurried interior feels like it belongs to a different era of Dutch dining culture, which is precisely the point. A devoted local following of regulars who have been coming for years. Book ahead for weekends.

02Bali€€

One of the most respected Indonesian restaurants in The Hague, serving an outstanding rijsttafel that has been refined over decades. The full rijsttafel is consistently rated among the very best in the Netherlands: a long succession of small dishes that builds into something comprehensive and satisfying. The beachside location in Scheveningen makes it a particularly good choice after a walk on the coast or a visit to the beach. Combine with one of the beach bars nearby for a drink before or after. Book ahead on weekends.

03Warung Mini€
Dunne Bierkade 13, Centrum · View on Google Maps

A small, no-frills Indonesian warung that locals swear by for honest, affordable Indonesian home cooking. No rijsttafel here: just simple, well-made dishes served quickly at prices that feel increasingly rare in the city centre. The nasi goreng, gado gado and rendang are all done properly. The kind of place that fills at lunch with people who know what they are doing. One of the best value meals in The Hague and on the same canal as Restaurant Basaal and De Paas, making the Dunne Bierkade one of the best short streets in the city for eating and drinking.

The Hague’s most established Michelin-starred restaurant, holding one star and a long reputation for classical French cooking that is light, pure and rooted in seasonal produce. 06Serre at Hotel des Indes€€€
Lange Voorhout 54-56, Centrum · View on Google Maps

The restaurant inside the legendary Hotel des Indes on the Lange Voorhout. The most beautiful dining room in The Hague: high ceilings, grand proportions and the quiet authority of one of the great Dutch hotels, which has received heads of state, visiting royalty and the diplomatic community since 1881. The cooking is classic European with a formal approach and service that is genuinely attentive. Worth visiting for the room as much as the food. Particularly good for a long Sunday lunch or a business dinner where the setting is expected to carry some of the weight.

One of The Hague’s most consistently praised restaurants, on a beautiful canal-side street in the centre. A newer addition to The Hague’s restaurant scene with a strong sense of identity: warm wood, soft earth tones and a record collection on display in a room that sits somewhere between Tokyo minimalism and relaxed Southern European. The menu is short and seasonal with a global influence, designed for sharing at a pace that encourages staying. Natural wines, playful cocktails and genuine attention to the music on the sound system. One of the more enjoyable and distinctive rooms in the city right now, popular with a younger professional and creative crowd.

A Spanish-Mediterranean restaurant in a historic building in the centre of The Hague, a short walk from the Grote Markt. The menu is tapas-style with dishes that change regularly and a terrace that is small but very pleasant in summer. The wine pairings are well considered and the prices are honest for the quality of what arrives at the table. A popular all-day cafe and restaurant in the Statenkwartier with a loyal following built on a strong brunch offer, a relaxed atmosphere and a kitchen that takes its food seriously without making that the point. The brunch is the main draw: well-sourced ingredients, thoughtful combinations and a room that is comfortable for a long, unhurried morning. Good dinner menu too. A dependable neighbourhood option in one of The Hague’s most pleasant residential areas, and the most natural recommendation for anyone staying in or moving to the Statenkwartier.

A Japanese dining bar on the Bierkade that has become one of the most reliably enjoyed restaurants in The Hague. Most of the top dishes come from the Robatayaki grill, which brings out traditional Japanese flavours in a sharing format designed for the table rather than individual plates. Good cocktails and sake alongside the food. Yuzu has a second location on Kerkstraat in the city centre. A natural recommendation for the international community, which has adopted it enthusiastically, and for anyone who wants a serious Japanese meal in a convivial rather than formal setting.

Pizza Beppe holds the official AVPN quality mark (Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana), which it was the first in the Netherlands to receive. The Denneweg location has a fine dining atmosphere for a pizzeria: culture, music and craftsmanship done with obvious commitment.
