Leiden has one of the finest healthcare environments in the Netherlands, anchored by the Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC), the university teaching hospital that is one of the top medical research centres in Europe. Alongside the LUMC, Leiden has a well-developed primary care network of huisartsen (GPs), specialist clinics, and a mental health infrastructure shaped by the large student and international population. Expats must register with a local huisarts as a first priority upon arrival: without a GP you cannot access specialist care. The Leiden International Centre can help direct you to GP practices with English-speaking capacity.
The Netherlands operates a mandatory health insurance (zorgverzekering) system. All residents must have Dutch health insurance within four months of registering with the municipality. The basic package (basispakket) covers GP visits, hospital care, and emergency treatment. Most insurers offer supplementary packages. See government.nl/topics/health-insurance for the official overview.
The Leiden University Medical Centre, one of the top university teaching hospitals in the Netherlands and a major European medical research centre. The LUMC provides the full range of specialist and emergency care including a 24/7 emergency department. Many expats affiliated with Leiden University work at the LUMC or are treated there. The hospital is on the eastern edge of the city adjacent to the Bio Science Park, accessible by tram from Leiden Centraal (tram 1, stop LUMC) or by bus. Waiting times in the emergency department can be long for non-critical cases; for urgent but non-life-threatening situations outside office hours, use the huisartsenpost (out-of-hours GP, 0900-9229) first.
