← Back to the Rotterdam city guide

Rotterdam’s food scene reflects the city’s character: bold, multicultural and willing to try things Amsterdam would not. This is a city rebuilt from nothing after 1940, drawing on the diversity of its port community and the ambition of chefs who chose Rotterdam specifically because it gave them freedom. Michelin has multiple stars here. The food press has taken notice. The main dining districts are Witte de Withstraat for independent restaurants, Katendrecht for creative dining on the south bank, and the Markthal area for casual eating and food exploration.

Price guide: under 15 euros per person, between 15 and 35 euros, between 35 and 65 euros, or over 65 euros. For fine dining at Parkheuvel, Fred, FG and Tres, book two to four weeks ahead for weekend dinners. The Markthal and Fenix Food Factory need no booking. Use TheFork or restaurant websites directly.

01Parkheuvel€€€€
Heuvellaan 21, 3016 GL Rotterdam, Het Park · View on Google Maps

Rotterdam’s most celebrated restaurant and the establishment that put the city firmly on the international fine dining map. Chef Erik van Loo holds two Michelin stars and has done so consistently for years, operating from an elegant half-moon pavilion in Het Park with a spectacular terrace overlooking the Nieuwe Maas. The cooking is rooted in classic French technique with real finesse: the signature combination of bream chicken and langoustine ravioli with lobster cream sauce is one of the most celebrated dishes in the Netherlands. The sommelier’s wine list, with a strong Burgundy focus, is exceptional. Note: Parkheuvel is currently temporarily closed for renovation works. Check the restaurant’s website before booking to confirm current availability.

02Restaurant Fred€€€€
Boompjes 41, 3011 XB Rotterdam, Centrum · View on Google Maps

Two Michelin stars and consistently one of the finest restaurants in the Netherlands. Chef Fred Mustert moved to this striking waterfront location in the Terraced Tower on Boompjes in 2023 after 14 years in Kralingen, and the new setting matches the ambition of the cooking: a beautiful modern interior with warm natural tones, a climate-controlled wine dome, a cheese boutique and magnificent views of the Willemsbrug and the Nieuwe Maas. The cuisine is built on a French classical foundation firmly guided by seasonal Dutch produce, prioritising recognisability and product quality over complexity. Multi-course tasting menus with an exceptional Burgundy-heavy wine list and service that balances warmth with refinement. One of the most complete fine dining experiences in the Netherlands.

Katshoek 37b, 3032 AE Rotterdam, Centrum · View on Google Maps

Chef Francois Geurds runs the only restaurant in the Netherlands with an in-house taste laboratory, using science and technology alongside classical French technique to create dishes that are genuinely unlike anything served elsewhere in the country. Two Michelin stars. The laboratory approach has produced some of the most talked-about plates in Dutch gastronomy over more than a decade. A genuinely extraordinary dining experience for those who want food that challenges and surprises as much as it satisfies. Geurds also runs the more accessible FG Food Labs at the same address, with a more experimental tasting menu format at a lower price point.

04Tres€€€€
Entrepothaven, Kop van Zuid, Rotterdam · View on Google Maps

A small counter restaurant in a former warehouse in the Kop van Zuid, run by chef Michael van der Kroft and front-of-house partner Emy Koster. The focus is on hyper-local Dutch produce processed with advanced techniques including fermentation, drying and deep ageing, so that familiar ingredients reveal unexpected depths. Menus follow the seasons strictly. Tres holds a Green Michelin Star for its commitment to sustainability and circular gastronomy. The raw, intimate atmosphere of the warehouse setting makes it unlike any other fine dining experience in Rotterdam. One of the most talked-about restaurants in the Netherlands for those who care about where food comes from as much as how it tastes. Book months ahead.

05The Millen€€€€
Weena 686, Rotterdam Marriott Hotel, Centrum · View on Google Maps

Chef and owner Wim Severein earned The Millen a Michelin star within five months of opening in 2018, a remarkable pace that reflects the precision of the cooking. Located on the R-floor of the Rotterdam Marriott Hotel in the Millennium Tower opposite Rotterdam Centraal, the restaurant serves creative dishes built from seasonal Dutch ingredients with surprising pairings and a relaxed atmosphere that avoids the stuffiness of some comparable fine dining rooms. A reliable and convenient fine dining choice in the centre for business dinners and special occasions.

Haringvliet 92B, 3011 TH Rotterdam, Oude Haven · View on Google Maps

A Michelin-recognised restaurant in a listed building at the picturesque Oude Haven, where exposed brick walls, Chesterfield chairs and a striking semi-circular counter create a room with an English club feel. Chef Kelvin de Pijper’s classic market-fresh cuisine places the ingredients at the centre: freshly caught cod with a velvety fish fumet cream sauce, crispy sweetbreads glazed with cardamom and lovage veal reduction. The cooking honours natural flavours with measured, confident nuance rather than theatrical complexity. One of the most enjoyable rooms in Rotterdam for a serious dinner that is not a full fine dining event.

Westerkade 11B, 3016 CL Rotterdam, Scheepvaartkwartier · View on Google Maps

A Michelin-starred seafood restaurant in the Scheepvaartkwartier where chef-owner Patrick ‘t Hart transforms fresh fish and seafood into refined dishes with a creative but measured twist. The name means sea salt and the menu reflects that focus entirely: fish starters and mains are refined and honest, with techniques including smoking, marinating and tempura applied with restraint. One of the best seafood restaurants in the Netherlands, in a city whose port heritage makes seafood a natural calling card. The waterfront setting in the historic shipping quarter is an appropriate backdrop for cooking of this quality.

Goudsesingel 230, 3011 KE Rotterdam · View on Google Maps

The finest plant-based dining in Rotterdam, holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality and good value. Chef Jord Coree builds menus around vegetables, mushrooms, grains and pulses sourced from local farmers and picked up by the restaurant’s own electric van, treated as the stars of each plate rather than supporting players. The wood-fired barbecue is central to the open kitchen and adds an element of theatre. All wines are biodynamic or natural. The vintage-style room is warm and sociable without being precious. A genuinely progressive restaurant that has made plant-based fine dining feel like a natural and desirable choice rather than a compromise.

A Rotterdam institution and one of the most beloved local restaurants in the city, famous for its meatballs, which devoted regulars describe as the best in the Netherlands. Served in a casual, convivial setting on the edge of Het Park overlooking the Maas, with a terrace in summer that is one of the better outdoor dining spots in Rotterdam. Not a fine dining destination but one of those genuinely local places that Rotterdammers are deeply attached to and that visitors frequently end up returning to. The old-school atmosphere and straightforward cooking are exactly what they should be.

Craft beer from Kaapse Brouwers, specialty coffee, artisan cheese, fresh bread, oysters and street food from multiple vendors create a casual and convivial food hall experience with genuine quality throughout. Saturday is the best day to visit when the full market is running. One of Rotterdam’s most enjoyable food destinations and the best single introduction to the Katendrecht neighbourhood. Dominee Jan Scharpstraat 298, 3011 GZ Rotterdam, Centrum · View on Google Maps

Not a single restaurant but the food destination that defines modern Rotterdam. Opened in 2014, the spectacular arch-shaped building with its vast ceiling mural houses over 100 fresh food stalls, restaurants and specialty food shops. Dutch cheese, fresh fish, international street food, wine and daily produce are all available under one extraordinary roof. The architecture by MVRDV is worth visiting in its own right: the residential apartments built into the arch above the market floor is one of the most audacious architectural ideas executed anywhere in the Netherlands. For newly arrived expats visiting Rotterdam, the Markthal is the best single introduction to the city’s food culture and self-confidence.

Grindweg 650, 3055 VD Rotterdam · View on Google Maps

Indonesian cuisine done properly, built around rijsttafel with rendang, satay and vegetable and sambal sides prepared fresh daily using traditional recipes. Rotterdam’s multicultural port community has created one of the best Indonesian food scenes outside Indonesia itself, and Dewi Sri is consistently recommended by both the local Indonesian community and expats who know the difference between a proper rijsttafel and a tourist version. A straightforward, authentic and satisfying Indonesian experience in a city that does Indonesian cooking better than almost anywhere in Europe.

Deliplein, Katendrecht, Rotterdam · View on Google Maps

A slice of Paris in the heart of Katendrecht. Classic French bistro fare delivered in a warm and unpretentious setting with excellent natural wines and the neighbourhood atmosphere that makes Katendrecht increasingly worth an evening visit. Escargots, steak frites, a good cheese selection and a sommelier who knows their French producers create an experience that is more authentic than the Amsterdam equivalents and considerably less self-conscious. One of the most enjoyable and reliable restaurants in Katendrecht, which is saying something given the quality of the neighbourhood’s dining scene in recent years.

15Hotel New York Restaurant€€€
Koninginnenhoofd 1, 3072 AD Rotterdam, Wilhelminapier · View on Google Maps

The restaurant of the historic Hotel New York on the Wilhelminapier, the former headquarters of the Holland America Line from which millions of Europeans emigrated to the United States in the early 20th century. The setting is extraordinary: an art nouveau interior with original fittings, a large terrace on the waterfront and Erasmus Bridge as the backdrop. The food is competent brasserie cooking rather than destination dining, but no other restaurant in Rotterdam offers a comparable combination of history, setting and waterfront atmosphere. An essential stop for anyone arriving from or heading to Katendrecht, and a genuinely atmospheric place for a long lunch.
