← Back to the Maastricht city guide

Maastricht’s bar scene is as characterful as its restaurants and as rooted in the pleasures of sitting and talking as the rest of the city’s social life. The Vrijthof terraces are for the long, warm-weather afternoon drink. The Wyck neighbourhood has the most interesting cocktail bars and wine bars. The Jekerkwartier and the streets around the Markt have the brown cafes and traditional eetcafes that locals use all year round. Mr. Smith in a vaulted Wyck cellar is the cocktail bar that put Maastricht on the Netherlands’ bar map. Cafe de Bobbel on the Markt is the quintessential Maastricht local bar. Stadsbrouwerij provides craft beer with a Maas river view. The city’s proximity to Belgium and Germany makes the beer and wine selection more interesting across the board than most Dutch cities of this size. For daytime coffee see the cafes guide.

Maastricht’s bar culture is warm and social without being loud. The Vrijthof and Markt terraces are the city’s living room in summer. The Wyck bars and the traditional brown cafes in the Jekerkwartier run well into the evening. Maastricht Carnival in February is the most important event in the city calendar and transforms the entire bar and cafe scene for several days.

01Mr. Smith€€
Rechtstraat 55, 6221 EG Maastricht · Wyck · View on Google Maps

Maastricht’s original speakeasy cocktail bar, set in a vaulted cellar in Wyck, and the bar that introduced serious cocktail culture to Limburg. Created by cocktail entrepreneur Pieter Van Veldhoven, the concept draws explicitly on the interwar bar culture of Harry’s in Venice and the Bar Americain in Monte Carlo: intrigue, discretion, and a strong drink over a good story. The bartenders build a seasonal menu of signatures alongside classics, with the spicy margarita-twist Nanas, made with Patron tequila, pineapple, lime, Cointreau and jalapeño foam, as a standout. The atmosphere is exclusive and inviting in equal measure, the gin and tonic selection is extensive, and cocktail workshops are available for groups of ten or more. One of the finest cocktail bars in the Netherlands.

02Harry’s€€
Wyck, Maastricht · View on Google Maps

A stylish and sophisticated cocktail bar in a historic Wyck building that positions itself in the tradition of the Venetian Harry’s: refined, precise, and with a genuine story behind every drink. The Wyck neighbourhood’s cobbled streets and seventeenth-century townhouses provide an appropriate setting for a bar that takes its cues from European bar culture rather than the Dutch pub tradition. Popular with visitors who want to drink well in beautiful surroundings and with the international Maastricht University community who make Wyck their neighbourhood. Worth booking for a Friday or Saturday evening in summer when the bar and the surrounding streets are at their most alive.

Markt, Maastricht · View on Google Maps

The quintessential Maastricht local bar, on the Markt and consistently described as the most authentic and genuine cafe in the city centre. A true classic: always buzzing with a lively mixed crowd, great drinks, excellent mussels and bar food, and a beautiful long bar that locals have been propping up for decades. The European-style grand cafe format with food available throughout the day makes it somewhere you can arrive at any hour and feel equally at home. Cafe de Bobbel is the bar that Maastricht insiders recommend first when asked where to have a drink, and for good reason: it delivers the real Maastricht bar experience without any pretension or tourist packaging.

04Cafe Sjiek€€
Sint Pieterstraat 13, 6211 JM Maastricht · View on Google Maps

Also covered in the restaurants guide for its Michelin Bib Gourmand kitchen, Cafe Sjiek is equally valid as a bar: the terrace in the city park is one of the most pleasant places to drink in Maastricht on a warm evening, the wine list is well considered and fairly priced, and the warm and unpretentious atmosphere makes it as comfortable for a glass of wine as for a full dinner. The Maastricht tradition of eetcafe culture, where the distinction between drinking and dining is deliberately blurred, is at its finest here.

Wyck, Maastricht · View on Google Maps

A cheese and wine bar in Wyck that reflects Maastricht’s Burgundian identity more completely than almost any other single address in the city: regional Limburg and Dutch cheeses served alongside a carefully chosen wine list, in the neighbourhood most associated with the city’s food and drink culture. The concept of eating cheese with wine rather than as a prelude or conclusion to a meal is entirely in keeping with the French-adjacent approach to eating that Maastricht has maintained for centuries. A genuine local favourite and one of the most pleasurable pre-dinner or late-evening options in Wyck.

Practical information

The Vrijthof in summer: The terraces on the Vrijthof are among the finest outdoor drinking and eating spots in the Netherlands. De Gouverneur, In Den Ouden Vogelstruys, and several other bars and restaurants line the square. Book terrace tables for weekends in summer; the square fills completely on warm Friday and Saturday evenings.

Carnival: Maastricht Carnival in February is the most important event in the city calendar and transforms the bar scene for several days. The city essentially shuts down for normal business and opens up completely for costumed celebrations across every bar and street in the centre. If you are in Maastricht during Carnival, there is nowhere else to be.

Wyck bar strip: The Rechtstraat and Wycker Brugstraat in Wyck form the most interesting bar corridor in the city for those who want cocktails, wine, and something beyond the standard Dutch brown cafe. Mr. Smith, Harry’s, De Kaasbar, BIKKE, and several wine bars are all within a few minutes’ walk of each other.

Belgian and Limburg beers: Maastricht’s proximity to Belgium and Germany gives it access to an unusually wide range of regional beers that most Dutch bars do not stock. Stadsbrouwerij, De Gouverneur, and the traditional eetcafes all carry regional Limburg and Belgian beers alongside the standard Dutch options.
