Shopping in Maastricht

Shopping streets, markets and specialist stores, updated 2026
← Back to the Maastricht city guide

Maastricht is the most interesting shopping city in the Netherlands outside Amsterdam. The Stokstraat quarter, the most beautifully preserved historic shopping street in the country, concentrates art galleries, jewellers, chocolatiers, cheesemongers, and high-end boutiques in buildings that have barely changed since the seventeenth century. The Wyck neighbourhood has the broadest range of independent shops in the city. The Markt square and Grote Staat form the main high-street corridor. The Mosae Forum is the primary indoor shopping centre for practical errands. The proximity to Belgium and the Tongeren Sunday antique market, covered in the day trips guide, extends the shopping reach of the city significantly. For the Limburgse vlaai and local food products, the weekly markets are the best source.

Maastricht city-centre shops typically open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, with late Thursday opening to 9pm. Sunday shopping (koopzondag) operates on selected Sundays throughout the year; check dates on the city centre website before planning a Sunday visit. The Markt square holds food markets on Wednesdays and Fridays and a flea market on Saturdays.

01Stokstraat Quarter
Stokstraat and surrounding lanes, between Vrijthof and Onze Lieve Vrouweplein · View on Google Maps

The finest historic shopping quarter in the Netherlands and the single most compelling reason to shop in Maastricht rather than any other Dutch city. The network of narrow lanes connecting the Vrijthof to the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein houses an extraordinary concentration of specialist and luxury retailers in seventeenth-century buildings that survived the wartime bombing that destroyed most of Maastricht’s medieval centre. Art galleries, jewellers working in gold and silver, chocolate shops including Neef Louis and other Limburg chocolatiers, cheese specialists, antique dealers, high-end fashion boutiques, and the Boekhandel Dominicanen bookshop church all occupy the same few blocks. A genuinely slow-shopping destination where the architecture and the street character are as rewarding as the individual shops. Allow a full afternoon and no agenda.

02Wyck Boutiques
Rechtstraat, Wycker Brugstraat and side streets, Wyck · View on Google Maps

The Wyck neighbourhood east of the Maas, referred to as Petit Paris, has developed its own cluster of independent boutiques alongside the restaurant and bar scene that has made it Maastricht’s trendiest neighbourhood. Fashion boutiques stocking Scandinavian and contemporary European brands, home and lifestyle shops, independent wine merchants, and specialty food stores occupy the Rechtstraat and the side streets off the Wycker Brugstraat. The shopping character is more international and design-forward than the historic luxury of the Stokstraat quarter, and suits those looking for independent fashion and homeware rather than fine art and jewellery. Worth exploring on the same visit as the Wyck restaurants and cafes. See the restaurants guide and cafes guide for the best of Wyck beyond shopping.

03Boekhandel Dominicanen
Dominicanerkerkstraat 1, 6211 CZ Maastricht · View on Google Maps

The world’s most beautiful bookshop inside a thirteenth-century Dominican Gothic church is covered in detail in both the cafes guide and the attractions guide. As a shopping destination it stands alone: the selection is broad and well curated for a general bookshop, the setting is extraordinary, and the Coffeelovers bar inside makes browsing an extended pleasure rather than a quick errand. The shop carries English, Dutch, French, and German titles throughout, which reflects the genuinely multilingual character of Maastricht’s reading public. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, Sunday 12pm to 6pm.

04Markt Square Markets
Markt square, Maastricht · Wednesday and Friday food markets, Saturday flea market · View on Google Maps

The Markt square holds food markets on Wednesday and Friday mornings with fresh produce, flowers, cheese, fish, bread, and local Limburg products including vlaai, the regional fruit tart that is the most practical edible souvenir of a visit to the city. A Saturday flea and second-hand market adds a different character to the square on weekend mornings. The Wednesday and Friday markets are the most convenient for weekly grocery shopping alongside a walk through the city centre, and the local Limburg cheese, butter, and produce stalls offer quality and variety that supermarkets cannot match. The Cafe de Bobbel on the Markt, covered in the bars guide, is the natural stop for a drink after the market.

05Grote Staat and Main Shopping Streets
Grote Staat, Kleine Staat, and city centre · View on Google Maps

The main high-street shopping corridor of Maastricht, running from the Markt along the Grote Staat and Kleine Staat with the full range of major Dutch and international chains: Zara, H&M, Bijenkorf, and the standard high-street retail offer that is replicated across most Dutch cities. Less interesting than the Stokstraat and Wyck from a shopping perspective, but useful for practical clothing and household needs. The Bijenkorf flagship store provides the best department store experience in South Limburg. The streets are pedestrianised and well managed, and the historic buildings along the route provide architectural interest that standard shopping street design cannot.

06Mosae Forum
Mosae Forum, Maastricht Centrum · View on Google Maps

The main indoor shopping centre in Maastricht, a modern complex close to the city centre with over fifty stores covering fashion, household goods, electronics, and daily needs. More practical than interesting but useful for those who want covered all-weather shopping, a broader range of chain stores in one place, or the larger supermarket options that the city centre streets do not provide. The gemeente registration office is located within the Mosae Forum, which makes it a practical first stop for newly arrived residents who need to register with the municipality before tackling the shopping.

07Tongeren Sunday Antique Market
Tongeren, Belgium · 30-40 min by train or bus · View on Google Maps

The largest antique and flea market in the Benelux, held every Sunday morning in Tongeren, Belgium, thirty to forty minutes from Maastricht by train or bus. Hundreds of dealers occupy the streets of the old town from early morning with objects spanning ancient coins and Roman artefacts, vintage furniture and clothing, paintings, ceramics, books, and every category of collectible imaginable. The Gallo-Roman Museum provides context for the Roman heritage that makes Tongeren an exceptionally rich source of genuinely old objects. Worth combining with a visit to the museum and lunch in one of the town’s restaurants. The Euregioticket covers the journey. Also covered in the day trips guide.

Practical information

Opening hours: City-centre shops Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, late Thursday to 9pm. Sunday shopping on selected koopzondagen throughout the year; check the city centre website for current dates. The Boekhandel Dominicanen is open Sunday 12pm to 6pm.

Weekly markets: Food markets on the Markt on Wednesday and Friday mornings, Saturday flea market. The Wednesday and Friday markets include the best selection of Limburg cheese, vlaai, and local produce in the city.

Limburgse vlaai: The regional fruit tart in a bread-dough case is the most important local food souvenir. Cherry, apricot, and rice pudding are the classic fillings. The Markt market stalls and the bakeries in the Stokstraat quarter have the best selections. The Bisschopsmolen bakery in the Jekerkwartier makes its vlaai from stone-ground flour from the watermill on the Jeker.

For serious antiques: The Tongeren Sunday market is the finest antique market in the region and worth the thirty-minute trip any Sunday. For gallery-quality art and antiques, TEFAF in March is in a different category entirely. See the museums guide for TEFAF details.
