The Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog is one of the quietest and most beautiful national parks in the Netherlands and reachable in under two hours. 01Leeuwarden35 min by train

The capital of Friesland, 35 minutes by direct train from Groningen Centraal, is one of the most rewarding and underrated day trips in the Netherlands. Leeuwarden served as a European Capital of Culture in 2018 and the investment in cultural infrastructure from that year remains visible: the Fries Museum is one of the finest regional art museums in the country, the Mata Hari birthplace museum occupies the house where the infamous spy was born in 1876, and the Leeuwarden city centre, built around canals and historic merchants’ houses, has a compact elegance that rewards a full day of walking. The city has a genuinely Frisian character that feels distinct from the rest of the Netherlands, with bilingual Dutch and Frisian street signs and a food and drink culture with its own regional identity. Easy and enjoyable as a day trip or a short weekend.

02Schiermonnikoog1 hr 45 min (train + ferry)

The smallest and quietest of the inhabited Wadden Islands, reachable from Groningen by train to Groningen Centraal, then intercity to Roodeschool, then bus to Lauwersoog ferry terminal, then a 45-minute ferry crossing. No cars are permitted on the island beyond the small service fleet. The entire island, including the beach, dune landscape, salt marshes, and tidal flats, is a national park and one of the finest pieces of natural landscape in the Netherlands. The village of Schiermonnikoog has a handful of hotels, cafes, and restaurants that function for most of the year on a modest and peaceful scale. Cycling is the standard mode of transport: bicycles can be hired at the ferry landing. One of the most genuinely restorative natural environments accessible from Groningen as a day trip or a night away.

03Assen and Drenthe National Parks20 min by train

The capital of Drenthe, 20 minutes by train from Groningen Centraal, is the gateway to some of the finest cycling and walking landscape in the Netherlands. National Park Drentsche Aa, directly accessible from Assen, is one of the best-preserved river valley landscapes in northwest Europe, with a cycling and walking network through heath, ancient hunebedden (megalithic dolmen tombs), woodland, and quiet villages that constitutes one of the most enjoyable full-day cycling routes in the north. The TT Circuit Assen, home of the annual Dutch TT MotoGP race, is a world-famous motorsport venue. Assen itself is modest as a city but functions excellently as a base for the Drenthe countryside. The hunebedden trail, connecting the megalithic tombs built around 3000 BC, is a cycling route unique in the Netherlands.

04Harlingen and the Frisian Lakes1 hr by train

The old Frisian port town of Harlingen, one hour by train via Leeuwarden, is one of the best-preserved harbour towns in the Netherlands: a working harbour with eighteenth-century merchant houses lining the quays, good fish restaurants, and ferries crossing to the Wadden Islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. The broader Frisian lake district, accessible by train to various lakeside villages, is the finest sailing and open-water environment in the Netherlands, particularly in summer when the lakes fill with sailing boats and the lakeside villages operate at a genuinely pleasant seasonal pace. Worth combining Harlingen with a Leeuwarden visit for a full Frisian day.

05Zwolle1 hr 15 min by train

A well-preserved Hanseatic city 75 minutes south by direct train with a compact medieval centre, a remarkable star-shaped fortification ring, and a strong cafe and restaurant culture that surpasses what many larger Dutch cities offer. The Sassenpoort, a fifteenth-century city gate, and the Grote Kerk anchor the historic centre. Zwolle is consistently ranked among the finest city days out in the Netherlands by those who know it, and consistently overlooked by those who do not. A natural stopping point on the train route south to Utrecht and Amsterdam, which makes it a practical addition to a Randstad trip rather than requiring a dedicated journey.

06Utrecht2 hrs by train

The fourth largest city in the Netherlands, two hours south by direct intercity train, with the finest canal wharf district in the country: the Oudegracht, where the canal runs below street level through two levels of vaulted cellars now occupied by cafes and restaurants, is unlike any other urban waterway in the Netherlands. The Domtoren, the tallest church tower in the country, can be climbed. The Centraal Museum holds Dutch Golden Age masters. Utrecht is notably younger and more alternative in character than Amsterdam or The Hague, with a strong independent culture in the neighbourhoods around the university. The two-hour journey makes it a genuine day trip commitment but a rewarding one.

07Amsterdam2 hr 15 min by train

The national capital is two hours and fifteen minutes from Groningen by direct intercity train, making it a long but entirely manageable day trip. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, canal district, Jordaan neighbourhood, and Vondelpark are all standard inclusions for any visit. The direct Schiphol Airport connection from Groningen via this same train line makes Amsterdam an essential practical destination for those flying from the north. Worth visiting for the scale of cultural options that Groningen, for all its quality of life, cannot match: a full day in Amsterdam easily fills with museums, markets, architecture, and eating that would take a week to exhaust. 08Haren and the Hortus10 min by train

The village immediately south of Groningen is the location of both the International School Groningen and the Hortus Botanicus, the 400-year-old botanical garden described in detail in the parks guide. At 10 minutes by train or 30 minutes by bicycle, it barely qualifies as a day trip from the city, but the combination of the Hortus garden, the Chinese Ming garden unique in Europe, the sculpture exhibition from May to September, and the pleasant village character of Haren make it a consistently enjoyable half-day out at any time of year. The Grand Cafe De Plantage and the Chinese Tea House on the Hortus grounds provide food and drinks without needing to leave the gardens.

09Delfzijl and the Eems Estuary45 min by train

A smaller industrial port town on the Eems estuary 45 minutes east by train, worth visiting for the wide skies, the open estuarial landscape, and the Wadden Sea views that feel entirely different from the city. The mudflat walking (wadlopen) culture is centred on the villages of the eastern Groningen coast, and guided mudflat walks across the tidal flats to Borkum Island in Germany are available from the area in summer. The landscape east of Groningen, with its vast open skies, church towers rising from flat polders, and the salt-edged estuary, is one of the most atmospherically distinctive in the Netherlands for those who respond to emptiness and scale rather than built heritage.
