← Back to the Groningen city guide

Groningen’s green spaces are concentrated to the north and south of the compact city centre, with the Noorderplantsoen, an English landscape park laid out in the nineteenth century, providing the primary city park experience just north of the Jatstraat and the Folkingestraat. The Stadspark to the southwest is the largest green space in the city, hosting the Liberation Day festival every 5 May. South of the city, the Hortus Botanicus in the village of Haren is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Netherlands at 20 hectares, with a unique Chinese Ming garden and sculpture exhibitions from May to September. For cycling beyond the city, the flat Groningen countryside and the canal routes between the historic dorpen are among the most rewarding in the Netherlands for those who want genuinely long, flat rides through the agricultural landscape of the north. Mahalo cafe on the Noorderplantsoen edge is the best place for a post-park coffee; it is covered in the cafes guide.

Groningen has the highest bicycle use per capita in the Netherlands. OV-fiets rental is available at Groningen Centraal. The Noorderplantsoen is walkable from the Jatstraat in ten minutes. The Hortus Haren is a 30-minute bicycle ride south, 10 minutes by train to Haren station plus a 15-minute walk, or 25 minutes by Bus 8 from the Grote Markt.

Noorderplantsoen, 9718 Groningen · north of city centre · View on Google Maps

The primary city park of Groningen, an English landscape park laid out on the site of the former city fortifications north of the city centre in the nineteenth century, with winding paths, tranquil ponds, mature trees, and open lawns that accommodate the entire range of park activities from morning runs to summer picnics and evening walks. The park hosts several festivals throughout the year, most significantly the Noorderzon performing arts festival every August, covered in the attractions guide, which transforms it into one of the finest outdoor festival spaces in the Netherlands. Swans, geese, and ducks coexist with students and Stadjers in a park that feels genuinely used rather than merely maintained. The Mahalo plant-based cafe on the Verlengde Grachtstraat at the park’s edge is covered in the cafes guide.

Stadspark, 9727 Groningen · southwest of city centre · View on Google Maps

The largest green space in Groningen, southwest of the centre, with woodland, open fields, a lake, playgrounds, sports facilities, and the MartiniPlaza events and concert venue on its edge. The Stadspark is the site of the Bevrijdingsfestival on 5 May each year, when tens of thousands of people fill the park for the Liberation Day outdoor music festival, one of the twelve city Liberation festivals held across the Netherlands. The park is less manicured and more expansive than the Noorderplantsoen, making it the choice for longer walks, family outings, and anyone who wants space rather than a landscaped park experience. Running, cycling, and dog walking are all popular throughout the year.

Martinikerkhof, 9712 JG Groningen · behind Hotel Prinsenhof · View on Google Maps

A restored sixteenth-century Renaissance garden behind the Hotel Prinsenhof on the Martinikerkhof, laid out in formal box hedges, herb beds, rose gardens, and espalier fruit trees reflecting the horticultural knowledge of the period. One of the oldest surviving gardens in the Netherlands, used by the Princes of Groningen before the city came under Dutch Republic control in 1594. Free to enter during daylight hours. Small, quiet, and thoroughly unexpected in the middle of the city centre, it offers a few genuinely restful minutes between the Martinikerk and the Feithhuis restaurant immediately adjacent. Rarely crowded even when the rest of the city is busy. Also covered in the museums guide as a heritage site.
