← Back to the Groningen city guide

Groningen is the most important retail centre in the north of the Netherlands, drawing shoppers from across Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe provinces. The Herestraat is the main high street, with all the major Dutch and international chains in a largely pedestrianised setting. The Folkingestraat, covered in more detail in the attractions guide as one of the finest streets in the city, offers the most interesting independent and specialist retail, from chocolatiers and spice importers to vintage clothing and jewellery. The Vismarkt holds food and antique markets three times a week and is the place for local produce, fresh fish, and street food. Westerhaven provides the large-format retail: MediaMarkt, Primark, and the practical chains. Van der Velde on the Akerkhof is the best bookshop in the north of the Netherlands. Late Thursday opening until 9pm covers most chains.

Most Groningen city-centre shops open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, with late Thursday (koopavond) opening to 9pm. Sunday shopping (koopzondag) operates on selected Sundays; check the city centre website for current dates before planning a Sunday visit. The Vismarkt market runs Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

The most interesting shopping street in Groningen, connecting the Grote Markt to the Vismarkt through a narrow historic lane lined with independent specialist shops that represent the diversity of the city as no other single street does. Chocolatiers, spice and Middle Eastern food importers, vintage clothing, handmade jewellery, artisanal food specialists, wine merchants, and specialist gift shops all occupy buildings that have hosted traders for centuries. The street has a genuine multicultural character that reflects Groningen’s international population, and the Friday and Saturday atmosphere when students and residents browse the stalls is one of the most enjoyable shopping experiences in the north. Practical information

Opening hours: City-centre shops Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, late Thursday (koopavond) until 9pm. Sunday shopping on selected koopzondagen throughout the year; the busiest periods are the Sundays before Christmas. The Herestraat and Westerhaven have the most reliable Sunday opening on koopzondagen. Check the Groningen city centre website for current koopzondag dates.

The Vismarkt market: Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday from approximately 9am. Saturday is the largest day. The Folkingestraat, adjacent to the Vismarkt, is worth combining with any market visit as the street fills with browsers on market mornings.

Parking: Westerhaven car park is the most convenient for the Herestraat and Westerhaven shopping. The Forum car park on the Schoolstraat is convenient for the Folkingestraat, Vismarkt, and Jatstraat. Most central shopping areas are car-free, so parking and cycling into the centre is the most practical approach.

For food shopping: The Vismarkt market and the Folkingestraat specialty food importers are the best options for produce and specialist ingredients. Albert Heijn and Jumbo supermarkets have multiple city-centre locations. The Korrewegwijk has the largest Asian supermarket in Groningen for those who need Asian ingredients not available in the centre.
